Frequently Asked Questions

What does M Advisor do?

Our advisors help physicians with their financial plans. This can look like investment management, investment analysis, tax planning, estate planning, or insurance policy reviews. Pretty much any part of life where money is present, M Advisor can be of service.

How do I get started with M Advisor?

The easiest way to get started is set up a virtual meeting. Financial advice is very personal, so you can expect to spend about 30 minutes to learn how M Advisor can help. Really, in the first meeting, we’ll want to learn what you want out of life. If we can at least start that conversation, it’s a successful meeting. You can access our calendar here!

Do you meet in-person or virtually?

Either! Whenever you schedule a meeting, you choose an in-person meeting or a virtual meeting. Most of our clients are insanely busy, and we seamlessly handle both types of meetings.

What do I need to have prepared for our first meeting?

There’s nothing you need to prepare in advance for our first meeting. Of course if there’s an imminent decision upcoming, please let us help right away. Some clients will bring their existing financial documents (statements, tax returns, trust documents) to the first meeting if they have these items available, but it certainly isn’t required for our first meeting.

How long does our first meeting take?

You can expect about 30 minutes for our meeting. It can take a little longer if you have lots of questions or if you have an immediate financial decision you’re trying to wrap up. Our first meeting should wrap up in about 30 minutes, but I always plan about an hour in case you want more time or you’re ready to get started right away.

How much does it cost to work with M Advisor?

The cost varies. Financial planning fees typically start at $250 per month, but if there can be some situations where that fee might not be pertinent. Asset management fees generally start at 1% of assets managed, but these fees also get lower, depending on the amount of assets we’re managing.

What is a financial plan?

A financial plan can be a fairly generic term. In its simplest form, a financial plan is the outcome of the decisions you make with your money. A financial plan combines the disciplines of saving, budgeting, investing, taxes, estate planning, and risk management. A financial plan can be delivered by documents, web-based applications, conversations or all of these combined.

What if I want to control my own financial plan?

With M Advisor, you’re always in control of your financial plan. We don’t ever take over your decision-making authority. Our job is to learn about what you want, so we can come up with ideas about the best planning actions for you to take. You always control the decisions; we just help you find the most efficient pathways to get to your destination.

How do I send M Advisor a referral?

We love receiving referrals. The best way to send a referral is to have your friend schedule a meeting directly. If your friend prefers, we’re always happy to call to email first.

Does M Advisor file taxes?

While taxes are one of our favorite topics, we don’t file taxes. We do help with tax planning, so we coordinate with your tax preparer to help you pay less taxes when opportunities to do so are available. If you are looking for a new tax preparer, we have some recommendations of tax preparers who are vetted and qualified.

How does M Advisor work with residents and fellows?

M Advisor has a special program for residents and fellows. For no fee, we’ll meet with a resident or fellow for up to two times per year to help navigate some of the money pressures of medicine, such as student loans, cash flow and budgeting, etc.
